In short

Every mark on the football board has its own tool. The route tool draws the receiver's path, the pass tool throws from the quarterback to it, the handoff goes to the running back and the block tool puts in each lineman's assignment. Motion shows a player moving before the snap, dashed so nobody reads it as a route, and coverage drags a zone over the defense. Each tool has its own color. iPhone and iPad.

Step by step

  1. Route and pass

On the board, the route tool draws the receiver's path from the player you start on. Then the passing tool throws from the quarterback to the end of that route.

On screen: Route draws the receiver's path. Pass throws from the quarterback to it.

  2. Handoff and blocks

For the run game, the handoff goes from the quarterback to the running back, and the block tool puts in each lineman's assignment with a short line that ends in a bar.

On screen: Handoff from the quarterback to the back. Block puts in the line's assignments.

  3. Motion and coverage

Motion shows a player moving before the snap, as a dashed line, so nobody takes it for a pass pattern. Coverage pulls a zone over the defense, so the quarterback's read is on the board too.

On screen: Motion before the snap. Coverage drags a zone onto the defense.
